Nepali Student Team Develops Low-Cost Ankle-Foot Prosthesis Prototype Using CubeMars AK60-6 Motor

CubeMars / Mar 25,2025

Recently, a team of Nepali students successfully developed an ankle-foot prosthesis prototype based on the CubeMars AK60-6 V1.1 robotic actuator and subjected it to rigorous testing. The project aims to provide affordable and high-performance prosthetic solutions for developing countries like Nepal.

Addressing the Challenge of High-Cost Prosthetics

Ankle-foot prostheses are essential assistive devices that help lower-limb amputees regain mobility. However, traditional prosthetics are often expensive and inaccessible in developing countries. To tackle this challenge, the student team developed a cost-effective ankle-foot prosthesis prototype based on hip motion tracking.

Utilizing 3D printing technology, the team manufactured the prosthesis shell and structural components, significantly reducing production costs while maintaining strength. This design, combined with the high performance of the AK60-6 motor, makes the prosthesis an ideal solution for patients in developing countries.

The Role of CubeMars Motors

The CubeMars AK60-6 V1.1 robotic actuator motor played a crucial role in the project:

  • High Torque and Precise Control: The AK60-6 V1.1 robotic actuator delivers the necessary high torque output for prosthetic movement while ensuring precise position control, allowing the prosthesis to accurately simulate a natural gait.

  • Fast Response: In dynamic motion tests, the AK60-6 motor demonstrated exceptional responsiveness, quickly adapting to the user’s movement changes.

  • Reliability and Durability: Through rigorous load and backdrive testing, the AK60-6 motor proved its reliability and durability over long-term use, meeting the high standards required for medical devices.

The prosthesis prototype has now passed initial testing, and the team plans to conduct further clinical validation to ensure its safety and effectiveness in real-world applications. Moving forward, CubeMars will continue to support such innovative projects, driving the development of affordable, high-performance medical technology to benefit patients worldwide.
